Continuing to trace guests’ lineages back through the late 1800s to the Civil War and earlier, this program features stories like that of Chris Rock’s maternal great-great-grandfather, Julius Caesar Tingman, a black Civil War veteran who was twice elected to the South Carolina State Legislature; and Don Cheadle’s ancestors, who had been enslaved by Chickasaw Indians and brought to Oklahoma on the tail end of the Trail of Tears—the mass relocation of Native Americans from the South during the 1830s. Most people don't realize that the Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Choctaw, Chickasaw Nations owned slaves. As self governing entities they weren't subject to the laws that freed slaves after the Civil War.

In 1907 Oklahoma became a state and Chickasaw Freedmen were United States citizens at last. Some how they had managed to make a way out of no way. Former slaves taught their descendants how to be free.

By the end of the 19th century the United States government had turned its back on Black people all over the south. In the late 1890s former slaves of the Native American Nations were eligible for citizenship and given forty acres

Many freed people reinvented their past as well as their names. Actor Don Cheadle knows nothing about his ancestors who lived through the aftermath of slavery and he is anxious to learn. His ancestors were owned by the Chickasaw Nation.

The video contains some scenes for the Stevenson Family Reunion picnic and the Stevenson Family Reunion banquet. It also contains some scenes from some of my immediate family "tourist excursions". Johneth's Home Video (Edited)
This is an edited version of the the home video (circa 1965) of Loretta and Leonard Stevenson and their daughter Johneth. The film was originally 8mm and later transferred to VHS and then converted to DVD.
This edited production is approximately 8 mintues of the longer original 20 minute home video; the original soundtrack has been replaced.
